Calgary: 4 Post-doc positions for Indigenous and Black scholars, U of Calgary
Dear colleagues,
Faculty affiliated with the Department of Geography and the interdisciplinary research group UC Cities at University of Calgary are delighted to welcome expressions of interest for the post-doctoral fellowship detailed below. The Provost’s Postdoctoral Award is explicitly for an Indigenous or Black scholar, intending to address persistent and stark inequalities in academia. Our community of scholars engages in a wide range of urban studies, STS, digital geographies, GIScience, and human geography research, with multiple ongoing projects summarized below. Our faculty have strong experience mentoring scholars from under-represented groups, and the University of Calgary robustly supports these faculty, post-docs, and graduate students, who investigate diverse spatial and urban processes and relations. If you qualify for the award and are interested in joining our community, please reach out to one of us in order to discuss research overlaps and ideas.
While you may feel comfortable contacting anyone in the Department of Geography or UC Cities, below you will find some who have expressed a particularly strong interest in recruiting for this position.
- Marit Rosol‘s research is interested in how global trends of economic integration, state restructuring and the ongoing economic and ecological crises impact social equality in urban communities. By applying an international comparative approach, she focuses on two primary areas of social well-being and social reproduction: (1) Critical Food Studies (2) Housing.
- Byron Miller‘s recent work focuses on the spatial constitution of social movements, urban governance and governmentality, neighbourhood change and inequality, the politics of urban and regional sustainability, and the social and environmental implications of smart cities.
- Eliot Tretterfocuses on a range of topics such as urban governance, culturally led urban development, gentrification, environmental racism, and universities as land-developers. He is currently researching the role of knowledge production, particularly patenting, for the development of the unconventional hydrocarbons.
- Ryan Burnsis interested in the social, political, spatial, and urban transformations of data, databases, web mapping, platforms, and related digital practices and objects. He is currently investigating the socio-political implications of smart cities and digital labor.
- Gwendolyn Blue‘s research examines public engagement with science and technology, broadly defined, in areas such as climate change, zoonotic disease, human-animal relations, and genomic applications. Current research focuses on social assessments of technologies and projects, drawing on an environmental justice framework.
Below, please find more information on the post-doctoral fellowship. To be transparent regarding the process, the deadline for submitting a full application package to the University of Calgary, including a supervisor statement of support, is May 15, so please do reach out to us as quickly as possible. We look forward to hearing from you!
